This document provides the early findings of a research project called 'Telling it like it is: Aboriginal Perspectives on Race and Race Relations'. The project aims to ask a wide range of Aboriginal people living in, or regularly visiting, Darwin what their views are on race and race relations, to provide an evidence base for attitudinal change, to develop new strategies for racial harmony, and to improve the way services are provided to Aboriginal people.

The law places limits on how police operate. Within those limits, police have a large amount of discretion about how they act. The way police use their discretion shapes people’s experiences with the criminal legal system and has been repeatedly linked to the over-representation of Aboriginal people in custody.
