The Royal Anthropological Society of Australasia documented Aboriginal place names in NSW. The NSW State Library's records state that 'the Society asked members to collect information on Aboriginal place names. In about August 1899 the Society circulated copies of a form to the governments of each colony with a request that they be sent to government officials in local areas'.

Since 1788, most places in NSW have been renamed in English. While some attempts have been made to include Aboriginal place names, this has only recently been incorporated into government regulations and policy.
