The object of this law was stated as to 'regulate the purchase, posession, use, carrying and sale of firearms; to prohibit the possession of certain dangerous weapons and articles; to repeal the *Pistol Licence Act, 1927*, and certain otehr Acts; to amend the *Crimes Act, 1900*, the *Police Offences Act, 1901*, and certain other Acts; and for purposes connected therewith.

The hunting and fishing practices of Aboriginal people have been significantly constrained by a series of laws and policies regulating hunting equipment, particularly firearms.

The law gives police the power to stop and search people and says how those searches must occur. In some circumstances this can include strip searches or searches under Firearm Prohibition Orders. Aboriginal and young people are disproportionately subjected to these searches.
